Welcome to the first edition of Curated Nonsense! Your weekly (bi-weekly?) list of interesting things on the Internet. Expect sports, tech, rants about reality TV, memes, really anything that piques my own curiosity over the last week (two weeks?).
Sports Corner
Two interesting reads in the sports world, both on the serious side.
[USA Today] A fascinating read about everything the Dallas Stars have done to make a monopoly in Dallas-area youth hockey. Essentially, when you go against who owns the ice time, suddenly your team doesn’t get to play.
[The Players Tribune] - Jordan Love speaks in his own works about his journey to the NFL and ties it back to losing his dad at 14. A must read if you're a Packers fan like myself, but also worthwhile for anyone who follows the NFL.
What I’m Watching
I broke my wrist recently so I’ve been couch bound for a while. Which means I have pretty much exhausted my reality TV backlog and YouTube stash and had to turn to… actual scripted shows? This means I finally got around to watching Season 1 of White Lotus. Verdict? Pretty good. Funny and intriguing. I've heard that season 2 is also good but that Season 3 might not be worth the watch - what are your thoughts? Should I keep going?
But speaking of YouTube, if you like racing or absurdity or ideally both, you should definitely watch this race that consisted of entirely Nissan Altimas.
Just Plain Weird Stuff
I suspect this is going to be my favorite of the recurring categories, because there’s always something strange going on these days.
[AP News] - They found a radioactive wasp nest in South Carolina. My favorite part is where they destroyed it but pretty much gave no other information about the type of wasp or if there could be others or how it got contaminated other than vaguely just being around a nuclear storage facility.
[NY Times] - A brush fire was started by a bird dropping a fish onto power lines, which then sparked. Which sounds legitimately insane, but there’s photos of the charred fish in the middle of the burn.
That’s All… For Now…
That’s all I have for this week. I suspect this format will evolve as I decide what I want to include, or what seems interesting. But thanks for reading!
